On July 8th, 2002, Nortex Regional Planning Commission ventured into planning for homeland security. There were approximately 50 interested local elected officials and first responders in attendance at this meeting. There was discussion on the state and federal activities relating to homeland security and on the outline of Governor Perry’s first responders initiative for the State of Texas.
On July 18th, 2002, the Executive Committee of Nortex Regional Planning Commission created a Homeland Security Advisory Committee comprised of local city and county emergency management coordinators. This advisory committee met on August 9, 2002 to begin the process of assessing potential threats, identifying available equipment and resources, strengthening mutual aid agreements, and developing a regional plan for cooperation. The committee drafted and mailed a survey form to assess the first responder’s needs.
The Homeland Security Advisory Committee met on August 28th, 2002 and conducted a regional needs analysis and goal setting session. Based on the committee’s first meeting input, a draft strategy document was created and reviewed by the committee members for comments and/or revisions. Nortex Regional Planning Commission staff modified the draft document to accommodate the comments and suggestions. Another meeting was held on October 8, 2002, in which the committee made minor revisions.
