An Ombudsman is a specially trained and certified individual, either volunteer or staff, who advocates for quality care in Texas nursing and assisted living facilities. The Ombudsman serves as part of the regional aging services network supported by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

An Ombudsman:

May intervene on behalf of the residents in long-term-care facilities to assure quality of care.

May investigate, negotiate, mediate, or initiate the resolution of complaints and concerns.

May improve communication between residents, family members and facility staff.

And may provide general information and assistance regarding long term care options, standards of practice and quality of care issues.

In all situations, the complaint is handled confidentially and information is not released without approval of the resident or legal guardian.
